From the forests of Wales to the high roads of Scotland, Rallying is one of most much-loved events in the motorsport calendar throughout the year. This National Motorsport Week sees the Nicky Grist Stages take place during the week, heading out of Builth Wells, Wales on 12 July.
With Rali Ceredigion and the much-loved RAC Rally later in the year, Rally is the discipline that keeps on giving, all year round. So, if you fancy your chances as the next Colin McRae, read on to find out how you can get into Rallying…
How do I start?
To start in Road Rallying all you need to do is join a motor club that runs such events as 12 car rallies or navigational scatters – a great way to get involved in a cost effective way!
You can compete as a driver from age 14 in a Junior Stage Rally, while adults require a full DVLA driving licence. Navigators can compete from as young as 12, with 17 as the minimum age for drivers.
Don’t forget to purchase a Go Rallying starter pack, and schedule in your BARS test before applying for a RS Inter Club – Stage Rally Competition Licence. If you just want to co-drive, you can apply for a Navigator’s licence without having to pass the BARS course.
What kind of car do I need?
For Road Rallying all you need is a taxed and insured road car with a valid MOT certificate.
For Stage Rallies you will need a car that complies with the regulations and has a Motorsport UK logbook. This will generally entail modifying the car with safety components such as a roll cage, special seats and harnesses, fire extinguishers and suchlike. You can either buy such a car second-hand and prepare it yourself, build one at home, or you can get a preparation company to modify a standard road car for you.
As Stage Rally cars have to use the public highway to get between stages the car will also need to be taxed and insured with a valid MOT certificate, as in Road Rallying.
What safety equipment needs to be fitted to my car?
Stage Rally cars are required to have safety equipment such as a Roll Over Protection System (ROPS), FIA-homologated seats and harness, and two fire extinguishers, details of which can be found in the National Competition Rules.
What personal protective equipment do I need to wear?
As a minimum you will be required to wear a helmet, fire-proof balaclava, FHR and flame resistant overalls to approved standards.
